Primary text

If the solar eclipse occurs outside the time of obligatory prayer, one should engage in remembrance of Allah (Dhikr) and supplication (Du'a), and not perform the eclipse prayer itself. This applies even if the eclipse occurs after Fajr or after 'Asr. 'Ata and Al-Zuhri indicated that standing and supplicating is the correct practice in such circumstances.

Supporting text

A narration from Ahmad, transmitted by Isma'il bin Sa'id, suggests that the eclipse prayer is performed even during the forbidden times. However, the opinion that one should only remember Allah and supplicate, and not pray, is considered the more apparent of the two opinions by Abu Bakr 'Abdul-'Aziz, and this opinion is adopted.
