Primary text

It is recommended to seek water (Istisqa) through those whose righteousness is apparent because they are nearer to the acceptance of supplication. Umar ibn Al-Khattab sought rain through Al-Abbas, the uncle of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Ibn Umar reported that Umar prayed for rain during the year of Famine (Al-Ramadah), saying: "O Allah, this is the uncle of Your Prophet (peace be upon him); we turn to You through him, so grant us rain." They had not left until Allah the Mighty and Majestic granted them rain.

Mu'awiyah sought rain by calling upon Yazid ibn Al-Aswad Al-Jursi, placing him near his feet on the pulpit, and asking Allah through him. A cloud appeared, and they were rained upon until they could barely reach their homes. Al-Dahhak also sought rain through him on another occasion.
