Primary text

There is no established requirement for a Khutbah associated with the eclipse prayer. This is the view of the companions of Ahmad, Malik, and the Ahl al-Ra'y (supporters of opinion). The Prophet (PBUH) delivered a sermon after the sun had cleared, in which he praised Allah, stated the nature of the signs, and commanded prayer, supplication, glorification, and charity. However, he did not command a sermon as part of the ritual itself, suggesting his address was specific to clarifying the ruling.

Supporting text

Al-Shafi'i holds that a sermon, similar to the two sermons of Jumu'ah, should be delivered, based on Aisha's narration of the Prophet addressing the people after the eclipse cleared, praising Allah, and delivering advice regarding the signs and related actions.
