It is not permissible to plant a tree inside a mosque. Ahmad explicitly stated this ruling. If a palm tree was planted after the land became a mosque, it was planted without right, and consuming its fruit is disliked. The Imam has the right to remove such a tree. This is because the mosque was established solely for the remembrance of God, prayer, and Quran recitation, not for planting trees. Furthermore, trees harm the mosque by obstructing worshippers, shedding leaves and fruit inside, attracting birds that soil the structure, and potentially causing children to gather and throw stones at it to harvest the fruit.
