What are the conditions regarding physical defects for the validity of manumission?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Expiations
Primary text
The slave being freed must not possess a defect that significantly hinders their ability to work. This principle was previously elaborated upon in the context of Zihar (a form of divorce/prohibition). A minor (Sabi) who is incapable of work is valid for manumission because their condition is temporary, leading towards completeness.
Supporting text
An insane person (Majnun) cannot be validly manumitted because there is no known limit to the cessation of their defect, making their condition resemble permanent disability (zaman).
