Does consuming broth (Marq) break an oath restricting meat consumption?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Expiations
Primary text
Consuming broth does not break the oath. This is because broth is not meat in reality, and the name 'meat' is not generally applied to it. The argument that broth contains dissolved meat particles or that it is considered 'one of the two meats' is rejected; the resemblance is metaphorical, as in other similar expressions, indicating it is distinct from true meat.
Supporting text
Abu Al-Khattab mentioned a narration from Ahmad that he disliked eating broth, viewing it as an act of piety (wara'). Ibn Abi Musa and Al-Qadi rule that consuming broth breaks the oath because it inevitably contains dissolved parts of the meat.
