Is a date considered a condiment?

Primary text
There are two views regarding whether a date constitutes a condiment. The first view holds that it is a condiment based on the report from Yusuf on the authority of Abdullah ibn Salam, who said, "I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, place a date on a piece of crusty bread and say, 'This is the condiment for this [bread].'" This hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud and mentioned by Imam Ahmad. The second view rejects it as a condiment because it is not customarily used to accompany bread, but rather eaten as staple food (qoot) or a sweet.
