Primary text

When a slave emancipates another slave for his expiation with the permission of the master, the relationship of loyalty (wala') is established for the one who emancipated him (the freeing slave). This is established based on the Prophet's saying: "Loyalty belongs only to the emancipator." This loyalty does not confer inheritance rights because the freed slave is not an heir. The establishment of loyalty without inheritance is permissible, such as when the religions of the parties differ or when the emancipator kills the slave he freed, in which case inheritance is nullified while loyalty remains.

Supporting text

If the one who was freed by the slave subsequently gains freedom, he inherits by virtue of loyalty, as the barrier preventing inheritance (such as religious difference or homicide) is removed.
