Does an individual who took an oath regarding prayer break the oath if they lead the prayer as Imam and then say the final Taslim (salutation)?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Expiations
Primary text
The oath is not broken if one leads the prayer and performs the final Taslim. This position is stated by Ahmad and held by Abu Hanifa. The basis for this ruling is that the Taslim is a prescribed element of the prayer (qawl mashru' fi al-salat), and therefore performing it does not constitute a breach of the oath, similar to the opening Takbir. The intention to greet the attendees during the final Taslim is not obligatory.
Supporting text
The scholars of the Shafi'i school maintain that the oath is broken because it is prescribed for the Imam to specifically intend to greet those present (al-hadirin) upon concluding the prayer.
