Primary text

The minimum requirement is the clothing of ten poor persons, based on the Quranic directive: "So expiation for it is feeding ten poor persons from the average of what you feed your families, or clothing them" (Quran 5:89). The clothing must be sufficient for prayer. For a man, this means a garment sufficient for prayer. For a woman, it requires a *dir'un* (a long tunic/dress) and a *khimar* (head covering). This is the position held by Malik.

Al-Awza'i and Abu Yusuf maintain that trousers (*sarawil*) are not sufficient. Ibrahim stated a garment that encompasses the body (*thawb jami'*). Al-Hasan stated that every poor person requires a complete set (*hullah*) consisting of an *izar* (loincloth) and a *rida'* (cloak). Ibn Umar, 'Ata, Tawus, Mujahid, 'Ikrimah, and the Companions of Opinion (Ashaab ar-Ra'y) hold that one garment suffices, making no distinction between men and women. It has been reported from Al-Hasan that a turban suffices, and Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib stated a cloak and a turban suffice. Al-Shafi'i permits the minimum thing to which the name 'clothing' applies, such as trousers, an *izar*, a *rida'*, a veil (*miqna'ah*), or a turban; two opinions exist regarding a cap (*qalanuswah*).
