What is prohibited by an oath to abstain from eating 'meat' (Lahm)?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Expiations
Primary text
An oath to abstain from eating meat is not broken by consuming fat (Shaham), marrow (Mukh), the brain (Dimagh), liver, spleen, lungs, heart, gizzard, or intestines. This is the view of Al-Shafi'i, supported by the principle that these items are not designated by the name 'meat' and possess distinct characteristics. Evidence is derived from the Hadith stating that two types of dead animals and two types of blood are lawful, listing the liver and spleen as the two types of blood, indicating they are not categorized as meat.

Abu Hanifa and Malik rule that consuming all these parts breaks the oath because they are genuinely flesh and are used like flesh, thus resembling thigh meat. If the oath intended to avoid fat content, then consuming fat, marrow, and anything fatty breaks the oath.
