Primary text

It is not sufficient if the amount of clothing given is equal in value to the required food donation, nor is it sufficient if the monetary value of the food has risen such that half a measure equals the cost of clothing the poor person. This is deemed contrary to the explicit instruction of the verse. Since the object of expiation is specified by divine text, it must be adhered to in kind, similar to manumission (Itaq) for which no monetary substitute is accepted when the object is available.
