Primary text

The freeing of a eunuch suffices for expiation without known dispute, whether he is castrated, paralyzed, or injured in the testicles. This is because such conditions constitute a defect that does not impair work or utility, and sometimes increases his value by removing lust, thus fulfilling the purpose, similar to a stud animal (Fahl). This view is held by Fadalah ibn 'Ubayd, Abu Hurairah, Ibn al-Musayyib, Al-Hasan, Tawus, Al-Shafi'i, Ishaq, Abu 'Ubayd, and Ibn al-Mundhir.

A minority view, reported from 'Ata', Al-Sha'bi, Al-Nakha'i, Al-Awza'i, Hammad, states that it does not suffice. This is based on a narration from Abu Hurairah where the Prophet (peace be upon him) stated that the child of fornication is the worst of three, and Abu Hurairah preferred being struck in the cause of Allah with a whip over freeing the child of fornication.
