If a person swears an oath not to speak for three nights or three days, the prohibition extends to the intervening days and nights unless a specific intention (niyyah) is declared. This interpretation is derived from the linguistic usage in sacred texts, where 'three days' and 'three nights' are treated as inclusive expressions covering both day and night periods. Evidence for this includes the Quranic verse stating, 'Your sign will be that you will not speak to the people for three days except by indication' (Quran 3:41), and another passage referring to 'three successive nights' (Quran 19:10). Furthermore, the Divine statement to Moses, 'We appointed for Moses thirty nights and completed it with ten' (Quran 7:142), demonstrates that the term 'nights' encompasses the entirety of the time period, including the daylight hours.
