Primary text

The traveler is not permitted to break the fast until he leaves the houses behind him, meaning he passes beyond them and exits their structures. This is the apparent position from Ahmad, where the journey must commence by passing the dwellings.

Supporting text

Al-Hasan is reported to have permitted breaking the fast in one's house on the day one intends to leave, with a similar report from 'Ata'. Ibn 'Abd al-Barr considered Al-Hasan's statement aberrant, as breaking the fast while residing is not permissible by sight or report. However, a narration from Muhammad ibn Ka'b states that Anas ibn Malik ate food before mounting his travel mount while intending to travel in Ramadan, stating it was 'Sunnah'.
