Is the eye considered a pathway that transmits substances to the throat, thus breaking the fast?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Fasting
Primary text
The eye is considered a pathway capable of transmitting substances to the throat, evidenced by the taste being perceived there, which invalidates the claim that the eye is not an opening. If a substance reaches the throat, it breaks the fast, similar to introduction via the nose or contamination from a deep wound (Ja'ifah) resulting from self-injury.
Supporting text
Abu Hanifa and Al-Shafi'i argued that the eye is not a pathway, and therefore substances entering it do not break the fast, drawing an analogy to applying oil to the head.
