Is the guardian obligated to make up (Qada') the missed fasts of the deceased?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Fasting
Primary text
The fast is not obligatory upon the guardian because the Prophet, peace be upon him, likened it to a debt, and the guardian is not obligated to settle the debt of the deceased. The debt is attached to the estate if one exists. However, it is recommended that the fast be performed on his behalf to clear his responsibility and release his pledge. This act is not specific to the guardian; rather, anyone who fasts on his behalf fulfills the obligation, as it is a voluntary act resembling settling a debt for someone else.
