What is incumbent upon a traveler who breaks his fast after intending to fast?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Fasting
Primary text
If a traveler breaks his fast, he is permitted to do all acts that invalidate the fast, including eating, drinking, and sexual intercourse, because the prohibition associated with these acts is lifted by the invalidation of the fast, similar to when night arrives. The traveler is only required to make up the missed day.
Supporting text
Imam Malik holds that if the traveler breaks the fast, he must make up the day (Qada') and perform expiation (Kaffarah), treating it as if he were a resident breaking the Ramadan fast.
