Primary text

The intention to fast is valid on the thirtieth night of Ramadan, even if there is a possibility it is Shawwal, because the underlying principle is the continuation of Ramadan. This is supported by the command of the Prophet, peace be upon him: 'nor break the fast until you see it.'

Supporting text

If a person stipulates, saying, 'If tomorrow is Ramadan, I am fasting, and if it is Shawwal, I am breaking my fast,' Ibn 'Aqil states the fast is invalid because there is no firm commitment, which is the essence of intention. However, it is also plausible that it is valid because this condition is contingent upon a factor where the original status is the continuation of Ramadan.
