Primary text

Intentionally bringing up vomit invalidates the fast, which requires making up the day. This is the consensus opinion among scholars, with Ibn al-Mundhir reporting agreement among the scholars on the invalidation of the fast for one who vomits intentionally. The evidence for this ruling is the narration from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "Whoever is overcome by vomiting, there is nothing upon him (to make up), but whoever vomits intentionally must make up the day." This hadith is authenticated as Hasan Gharib by al-Tirmidhi.

Supporting text

A view attributed to Ibn Mas'ud and Ibn Abbas states that vomiting does not break the fast. This is supported by a narration where the Prophet, peace be upon him, listed three things that do not invalidate the fast: cupping, vomiting, and seminal emission. Furthermore, it is argued that what exits the body does not invalidate the fast, only what enters.
