It is recommended to hasten breaking the fast. This is the position held by the majority of scholars. The evidence cited is the hadith narrated by Sahl ibn Sa'd As-Sa'idi, stating that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "My Ummah (nation) will remain upright as long as they hasten the Iftar." This hadith is agreed upon (Muttafaqun 'alayh). Furthermore, it is narrated from Aisha that the one who hastened breaking the fast and hastened the Maghrib prayer was following the practice of the Messenger of Allah. Supporting this view is the statement attributed to Allah saying: "The most beloved of My servants to Me are those who are the quickest to break their fast," as graded by At-Tirmidhi as Hassan Gharib. Anas also reported that he never saw the Messenger of Allah pray until he had broken his fast, even if only with a sip of water.
