Upon what items is it recommended to break the fast?

It is recommended to break the fast with fresh dates (rutabat). If fresh dates are unavailable, one should break the fast with dried dates (tamrat). If neither is available, one should break the fast with water. This is based on the narration from Anas, who said the Prophet, peace be upon him, used to break his fast with fresh dates before praying; if not available, then with dried dates; and if neither was available, then with a few sips of water. Another hadith from Sulayman ibn 'Amir states that whoever breaks the fast should break it with dates; if dates are not found, then with water, for water is purifying (tahur). This hadith is graded as Hassan Sahih by At-Tirmidhi.
