Linguistically, fasting means abstention (Imsak). It is said, 'The day fasted,' when the sun ceases its course. This concept of abstention is further evidenced by the statement of Mary, peace be upon her, "I have vowed to the Most Merciful a fast" (Quran 19:26), which signifies abstinence from speech. Similarly, a poet described horses as fasting, meaning they were restrained from neighing.
