In which month is Laylat al-Qadr located?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Fasting
Primary text
The overwhelming majority of scholars hold that Laylat al-Qadr is in Ramadan. This is concluded because Allah informed that He sent down the Quran in Laylat al-Qadr, and He also stated that He sent it down in Ramadan (Quran 2:185). For the reports not to contradict, Laylat al-Qadr must be in Ramadan. Furthermore, the Prophet, peace be upon him, explicitly stated it is in Ramadan in the Hadith of Abu Dharr and commanded seeking it in the last ten nights, particularly on the odd nights within them. Ubayy ibn Ka'b asserted that Ibn Mas'ud knew it was in Ramadan but disliked announcing it so people would not become complacent.

Ibn Mas'ud held the view that whoever observes the entire year will encounter it, implying it could occur throughout the year. However, this view is reconciled by the fact that the reports confirming its location in Ramadan are definitive regarding the revelation of the Quran.
