Primary text

If his fast coincides with the month following Ramadan, it is considered valid if the number of days fasted equals the number of days missed, regardless of whether the duration matches the period between the two moons or if the months were full or deficient. It is not sufficient if the number of days is less than the missed month.

Supporting text

The position of Al-Kharqi suggests sufficiency if the period between the two moons is matched, regardless of whether both months were full or deficient. This is deemed incorrect because Allah commanded a count of 'other days' (Quran 2:184), requiring the count to match what was missed, like for the sick or traveler. If the fast includes the day of Eid or the days of Tashriq, whether they count is subject to two narrations based on the validity of fasting them as obligatory.
