Open in Qurani

Primary text

Hajj and Umrah are exceptions to other voluntary acts of worship; they are not rendered non-binding by commencing them, due to the solemnity of their consecration (Ihrām), and one cannot exit them by spoiling them. Even if one mistakenly believed them to be obligatory when they were voluntary, one cannot exit them.

Supporting text

Other supererogatory acts of worship follow the ruling of voluntary fasting: they do not become obligatory upon starting, and there is no need to make them up if broken, with the exception of Hajj and Umrah.
