Primary text

Fasting the month of Ramadan is obligatory. The basis for this obligation is derived from the Quran, the Sunnah, and the Consensus (Ijma). The Quranic proof is the saying of Allah: "O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you" (Quran 2:183), leading to the command: "So whoever among you sights [the new moon of the month of Ramadan], then he must fast that month" (Quran 2:185). The Sunnah is confirmed by the Prophet's statement, "Islam is built upon five," which includes the fasting of Ramadan. Furthermore, the consensus of the Muslims affirms the obligation of fasting Ramadan.
