Primary text

Insanity is treated like unconsciousness regarding its initial effect: if it occurs for the entire day, the fast is invalid. However, unlike unconsciousness, if insanity occurs for the entire month, no make-up fast is required.

Supporting text

Abu Hanifa states that if the insane person regains sanity during any part of Ramadan, they must make up the preceding time, as they attained a period of sanity during Ramadan. Al-Shafi'i holds that if insanity occurs during any part of the day, it invalidates the fast because it is a condition that prevents the obligation of fasting, similar to menstruation.
