What is the ruling if one forms the intention for fasting at night but subsequently engages in an act that invalidates the fast before dawn?

If the intention is formed during the night, the fast is valid, regardless of whether the person subsequently eats, drinks, or engages in sexual relations before dawn, or refrains from such acts. The intention having been made at night is sufficient.

Some Shafi'i scholars stipulate that the fasting person must not commit any act nullifying the fast after forming the intention.
