Primary text

Some scholars base the permissibility of performing voluntary worship before completing a mandatory fast on the difference in opinion regarding the validity of performing a voluntary fast before making up a missed obligatory fast. Those who permit voluntary acts before making up the obligatory fast dislike performing the make-up fast during the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah, intending to reserve those days for voluntary worship to gain their immense reward while still fulfilling the obligation later.

Conversely, those who prohibit performing voluntary fasts before completing an obligatory one do not dislike making up the fast during these days; rather, they encourage performing the make-up fast during this period to avoid being completely devoid of any form of worship.
