Primary text

If a person neglects to fast Ramadan and lives to witness another Ramadan before dying, one measure of food must be given to a single poor person for each missed day. This ruling is explicitly stated by Ahmad, as narrated by Abu Dawud, concerning a woman who missed a Ramadan, then lived to see another before passing away; he mandated feeding on her behalf. The quantity should be thirty measures for thirty days, consisting of staple food such as bread and meat, if possible, of the average quality consumed by the community. This is because one act of atonement removes the negligence of delay, rendering the situation as if the person died without having been negligent.
