What is the ruling on rinsing the mouth while fasting for non-purification purposes?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Fasting
Primary text
If rinsing the mouth while fasting is for a necessity, such as cleaning the mouth when needed, the ruling is the same as rinsing for purification. If it is done out of idle play (Abath) or solely due to thirst, it is disliked (Makruh). If water reaches the throat during such disliked rinsing, or if water is intentionally held in the mouth for play or cooling, the ruling is the same as that for excessive sniffing where the water reaches the throat, as it stems from a disliked action.
Supporting text
When a fasting person experiences thirst and rinses their mouth, Imam Ahmad prefers that they instead sprinkle water upon their chest.
