Is tasting food while fasting disliked?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Fasting
Primary text
Tasting food is preferably avoided by Ahmad. However, if one tastes food, it does not invalidate the fast. Ibn Abbas permits tasting food, vinegar, or anything one intends to purchase. Al-Hasan used to chew nuts for his grandson while fasting, and Ibrahim also permitted it.
Supporting text
Ibn Aqil holds that tasting food without need is disliked (*yukrah*), but permissible if there is a need. If one tastes it and finds the taste in the throat, the fast is broken; otherwise, it is not broken.
