Is a traveler permitted to break the fast in Ramadan?

Primary text
A traveler is permitted to break the fast in Ramadan and outside of it, supported by the Quran: "And whoever is among you ill or on a journey, then [he must fast] an equal number of other days" (Quran 2:184), and the Sunnah: "Indeed, Allah has exempted the traveler from fasting." This is established by numerous hadiths, including a sound one reported by Al-Tirmidhi. Muslims are in consensus on the permissibility of breaking the fast for a traveler, provided the journey is long enough to permit shortening prayers.
