Book of Fighting Rebellious Groups
Primary text
If each side has taken captives from the other, it is permissible for the army of justice to ransom captives of the army of rebellion with their own captives. However, if the rebels kill the captives held by the army of justice, the army of justice is not permitted to kill their own captives in retaliation because one is not held responsible or punished for the crime of another.
