What is the ruling regarding the lives of those killed by apostates?

Primary text
The ruling regarding the slain is that the apostates are treated like rebels (*Ahl al-Bughat*) concerning them. This is supported by the report concerning Abu Bakr and 'Umar, where 'Umar differed with Abu Bakr, stating that the Muslims would not pay blood money for their slain, as those killed died in the cause of Allah and achieved martyrdom. Evidence for this precedent is found in the killing of 'Ukasha ibn Muhsin and Thabit ibn Athram by Tulaibha al-Asadi, for which Tulaibha was not made to pay compensation, and the killings committed by Banu Hanifa during the Battle of Yamama, for which they were not charged compensation.
