General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Foundlings
Primary text
The expert *Qā'if* is defined as someone possessing knowledge of tracing lineage through resemblance, and this skill is not restricted to a specific tribe. The criterion is mastery and repeated accuracy in such identification. Examples of those noted for this skill include Mujazziz al-Mudaliji and Iyās ibn Mu'āwiyah al-Muzanī. The pronouncement of the *Qā'if* is only accepted if the individual is a free man, possesses justice (*'adl*), is experienced in accuracy, and is male, because their declaration constitutes a ruling (*ḥukm*), which requires such qualifications.
