What is the required waiting period (*Iddah*) for an *Umm Walad* (a female slave bearing the master's child) after the master frees her through a bequest or otherwise?

The *Umm Walad* must observe a waiting period (*Iddah*) equivalent to one menstrual cycle (*Haydah*) to establish her purity, as this period signifies the end of her master's right to sexual intercourse with her, similar to when her master frees her during his lifetime. Al-Kharqi termed this period *Iddah* because the purification period (*Istibra'*) resembles the standard waiting period in that it prevents remarriage and confirms freedom from pregnancy.
