Primary text

Attendance at Jumu'ah prayer is obligatory regardless of whether the Imam leading it is a Sunni, an innovator (*Mubtadi'),* a just person, or a transgressor (*Fasiq*). This is the position stated by Ahmad. The evidence for this obligation is the general command in the Quran: {When the call is made for prayer on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trade} (Quran 62:9). Furthermore, there is the hadith stating, "Whoever intentionally misses it during my life or after me, while there is a just or unjust Imam, due to negligence or denial, may Allah never unite his affairs." The consensus (*Ijma'*) of the Companions (*Sahaba*) also supports this, as Abdullah ibn Umar and others attended it behind the Hajj leader and similar figures without any reported objection.

Supporting text

Regarding one led by an innovator, if the worshipper knows the Imam holds their views, he should repeat the prayer. If he is unaware, he should not repeat it until certainty is established. A reported secondary narration from Abu Abdullah suggests the prayer behind such an Imam is not to be repeated, aligning with the apparent practice of the Companions who did not reportedly repeat it.
