What is the count of additional takbeers in the Eid prayer rak'ahs?
Chapter on the Two Eid Prayers
Al-Mughni
Book of Friday Prayer
Primary text
In the first rak'ah, there are seven takbeers, including the opening *Takbirat al-Ihram*. In the second rak'ah, there are five takbeers, excluding the takbeer to rise from prostration. This view is held by the seven jurists of Medina, Al-Awza'i, Al-Shafi'i, and Ishaq. This is based on the strongest authenticated hadith from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr and others stating seven in the first and five in the latter, and that recitation follows both sets of takbeers.

Some scholars, including Abu Hanifa and Al-Thawri, hold for three takbeers in both rak'ahs, relying on the weaker hadith of Abu Musa. Others, like Ibn 'Abbas and Al-Nakh'i, held for seven in both rak'ahs. Al-Shafi'i and others suggested seven takbeers in the first rak'ah *in addition* to the *Takbirat al-Ihram*, based on a narration from 'Aishah mentioning twelve takbeers besides the *Takbirat al-Ihram*.
