Primary text

The Ghusl on the day of Jumu'ah is recommended, not obligatory, according to the majority of scholars, including al-Awza'i, al-Thawri, Malik, al-Shafi'i, Ibn al-Mundhir, and the People of Opinion; some scholars consider this an agreement. The evidence is the Hadith where the Prophet (peace be upon him) stated: 'Whoever performs ablution on Friday, that is good, but if he performs Ghusl, the Ghusl is better.' Furthermore, the actions of companions like 'Uthman, who only performed ablution, were not rejected by 'Umar, although 'Umar reminded him that the Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded Ghusl.

Supporting text

A second narration attributed to Ahmad suggests it is obligatory, supported by the Hadith: 'Ghusl of Jumu'ah is obligatory upon every male who has reached puberty,' and 'Whoever of you comes to Jumu'ah, let him perform Ghusl.'
