Is it obligatory to deliver the sermon according to the exact manner (Safah) of the Prophet's sermon?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Friday Prayer
Primary text
It is agreed upon that it is not obligatory for the sermon to be delivered according to the exact manner of the Prophet's sermon. This is because it is narrated that he used to recite verses, and reciting verses is not mandatory. However, it is recommended to recite verses, as narrated by Umm Hisham bint Harithah bin Al-Nu'man, who said she learned Surah Al-Waqi'ah only from the mouth of the Messenger of Allah, as he used to preach it every Friday. A narration from the sister of Umrah, who was older than her, mentioned a similar practice, both narrated by Muslim. Furthermore, the Hadith of Al-Sha'bi indicates that the Prophet used to recite a Surah.
Supporting text
The apparent view of Ahmad is that there is no fixed requirement for recitation, whatever he wishes to read suffices. He also stated that if one preaches while in a state of major ritual impurity (junub), then bathes and leads the prayer, it is sufficient, even though a Junub person is prohibited from reciting a verse. Al-Kharqi stated that one should recite something from the Quran without specifying what.
