Primary text

It is permissible to lift a prayer mat placed by someone and sit in its location. This permissibility is based on the reasoning that a prayer mat possesses no inherent sanctity or special rights over the ground. Furthermore, precedence in prayer is established by the physical presence of the worshipper's body, not by the mat itself. Lifting the mat also prevents the owner from arriving late and subsequently needing to step over the necks of those already praying, which is discouraged.

Supporting text

It is impermissible to move the prayer mat because doing so constitutes an unwarranted interference with the rights of its owner, potentially leading to disputes. Additionally, since the owner has claimed that spot first, moving the mat is analogous to unjustly claiming unowned (mawāt) land through prior assertion.
