Primary text

It is permissible for a man to say to another man on the day of Eid, "Taqabbalallahu minna wa minkum." Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on him, permits this. Harab reports that Ahmad was asked about people saying this on the two Eids and he stated there is no harm in it. This practice is narrated from the people of Sham, tracing it back to Abu Umamah, and also to Wathilah ibn al-Asqa'. Ibn Aqil mentioned traditions concerning the congratulation of Eid, including that Muhammad ibn Ziyad said he was with Abu Umamah al-Bahili and other Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and when they returned from the Eid prayer, some would say to others, "Taqabbalallahu minna wa minkum." Ahmad deemed the chain of narration for the Hadith of Abu Umamah to be sound (Jayyid al-Isnad). Malik ibn Anas confirmed that this saying has been known in Medina for thirty-five years.

Ahmad was reported to state that he himself would not initiate this greeting to anyone, but if someone said it to him, he would return the greeting to them.
