Chapter on the Two Eid Prayers

Book of Friday Prayer

Primary text

It is recommended to proceed to the Eid prayer on foot with solemnity and composure, similar to the recommendation for Jumu'ah prayer. This view is supported by scholars such as 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz, al-Nakha'i, al-Thawri, and al-Shafi'i. The evidence includes the report that the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not ride for Eid or a funeral. Ibn 'Umar narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to go to and return from the Eid prayer walking, as narrated by Ibn Majah. Furthermore, 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stated that it is from the Sunnah to attend Eid walking, a narration graded as Hasan by al-Tirmidhi.

Supporting text

If one has a valid excuse or the distance is far, riding is permissible. Ahmad (may Allah have mercy upon him) indicated that they walk when the location is near, but riding is permissible if the distance is far. 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz instructed those from the villages to ride to the prayer place but to walk once they reached the city and approached the prayer grounds.
