Primary text

Two sermons (Khutbahs) are stipulated as necessary for Jumu'ah (Friday prayer). This is the Madhhab of Al-Shafi'i. The evidence for requiring two sermons is that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to deliver two sermons, as narrated in the Hadith of Ibn Umar and Jabir bin Samurah. Furthermore, the Prophet commanded: "Pray as you have seen me praying." The two sermons are considered a substitute for the two Rak'ahs of the prayer, making each sermon equivalent to one Rak'ah, thus deficiency in one is like deficiency in one of the Rak'ahs.

Malik, Awza'i, Ishaq, Abu Thawr, Ibn al-Mundhir, and the Ashab ar-Ra'y hold that one sermon suffices. A narration from Ahmad supports this, stating that the sermon must be as the Prophet delivered it or a complete sermon. It is also held that one sermon suffices because the command to "hasten to the remembrance of Allah" (Quran 62:9) did not specify the form.
