How should one act if they join the Imam during the Tashahhud or the Khutbah of the Eid prayer?
Chapter on the Two Eid Prayers
Al-Mughni
Book of Friday Prayer
Primary text
If a person joins the Imam during the *Tashahhud* (final sitting), they should sit with him. After the Imam gives the *salam*, the person stands and prays two rak'ahs, performing the *takbir* within them. This is because they caught part of a prayer that is not substituted by four rak'ahs, so they complete it according to its prescribed form like other prayers.
Supporting text
If one joins during the *Khutbah* (sermon) while inside the mosque, they should pray *Tahiyyat al-Masjid* (mosque greeting) because if this is permissible during the obligatory Jumu'ah sermon, it is more appropriate here. If one joins outside the mosque, they sit and listen to the sermon, and afterwards, if they wish, they may make up the Eid prayer as previously detailed.
