Is a person permitted to leave their seated place and return to it later?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Friday Prayer
Primary text
A person who leaves their sitting place due to necessity or the need to perform ablution is permitted to do so. If one stands up from their seat and then returns to it, they retain the right to that seat. This is established by the statement of the Prophet, peace be upon him: "Whoever stands up from his seat and then returns to it, he has the greatest right to it." Furthermore, crossing over people's shoulders to return to one's place is judged like seeing an opening in front of oneself. The precedent for leaving for necessity is shown when the Prophet, peace be upon him, left quickly after prayer, explaining he remembered something of charity (*tabar*) that he disliked holding back from distributing.
