What is the prescribed duration for the Takbir (exaltation) during Eid al-Adha?
Chapter on the Two Eid Prayers
Al-Mughni
Book of Friday Prayer
Primary text
The Takbir for Eid al-Adha is prescribed from the Fajr prayer on the Day of Arafah until the Asr prayer on the final day of Tashriq (the 13th of Dhul-Hijjah). This is the opinion of our Imam (Ahmad), supported by Umar, Ali, Ibn Abbas, and Ibn Mas'ud, as well as Al-Thawri, Ibn Uyaynah, Abu Yusuf, Muhammad, and Al-Shafi'i in some narrations. The evidence includes the narration from Jabir that the Prophet, peace be upon him, recited the Takbir after Fajr on the Day of Arafah and continued it until the Asr prayer on the last day of Tashriq. Furthermore, this is supported by the established consensus of the Companions.

One opinion, attributed to Ibn Mas'ud, states that the Takbir commences from the morning of Arafah until the Asr prayer on the Day of Sacrifice (Eid day). Another narration, from Ibn Umar and Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, suggests the Takbir begins from the Dhuhr prayer on the Day of Sacrifice until the dawn prayer on the last day of Tashriq, aligning with the view of Malik and the common narration from Al-Shafi'i, based on the people following the pilgrims' rituals (Tahlil stopping after the first stone throwing, and Takbir starting with the throwing on Eid day). Regarding Muharrimin (those in Ihram), they begin their Takbir from the Dhuhr prayer on the Day of Sacrifice because they were occupied with the Talbiyah beforehand, unlike others who start on the Day of Arafah due to the absence of a prohibitive factor.
