Primary text

There is no known disagreement among scholars that reciting Al-Fatiha and another Surah in each rak'ah is legislated, and that recitation should be audible (Jahri). It is recommended to recite Surah Al-A'la (Sabbih) in the first rak'ah and Surah Al-Ghashiyah in the second, based on the report of Al-Nu'man ibn Bashir regarding the Prophet's ﷺ practice in Eid and Jumu'ah prayers. This is preferred because Surah Al-A'la contains an exhortation regarding purification (charity) and prayer, corresponding to the verse {Successful is he who purifies himself} (Quran 87:14).

Supporting text

Al-Shafi'i stated that one should recite Surah Qaf in the first and Surah Al-Qamar in the second, based on 'Umar asking Abu Wa'il Al-Laythi about the Prophet's ﷺ practice. Abu Hanifa stated that there is no specific appointed recitation, and Ibn Mas'ud recited Al-Fatiha followed by any Surah from Al-Mufassal.
